The head of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Dr. Zafer Demircan attended the Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI) meeting organized by the IAEA in Vienna, Austria, on 23-24 June.
The NDK Delegation headed by Dr. Zafer DEMİRCAN, President of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NDK), attended the Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI) meeting held by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, the capital of Austria, on 23-24 June 2022.
NHSI is an initiative that brings regulators, designers, operators and other relevant organizations together with the aim of establishing, operating and authorizing Small Modular Reactors (SMR), which are planned to be deployed for various purposes in many countries in foreseeable future, without compromising nuclear safety and security. As it is known, there is a lack of experience and legislation regarding the establishment, operation and authorization of SMRs all over the world. The main objective of NHSI can be summarized as the creation of a common regulatory framework that can be used in the authorization processes of SMRs by bringing together all stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of our country at the NHSI meeting, Dr. Zafer DEMİRCAN stated that although this initiative is beneficial in terms of sharing experience and knowledge sharing, difficulties may be encountered during the creation of an international common regulatory framework since the countries have different regulatory approaches and legislations are binding for each country within their own legal framework.
During the meeting, Mr. Zafer DEMİRCAN also met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano GROSSI. Within the scope of the visit, NDK Delegation paid an official visit to our Permanent Representation of the United Nations (UN) at Vienna Office.
